Background of the study
Personal hygiene practices are integral to public health and individual well-being, particularly in densely populated marketplaces where the risk of communicable diseases is high. In Ganye Local Government Area, Adamawa State, adult education programs have been implemented to improve the hygiene practices among market women, who play a central role in the local economy. These programs focus on imparting practical knowledge about hygiene, sanitation, and disease prevention. The educational interventions are designed to address common challenges such as limited access to clean water and inadequate sanitation facilities, which are exacerbated by economic constraints (Chukwu, 2023). The historical context of market women in Ganye reveals a traditional reliance on informal knowledge, which may not always align with modern hygiene practices. Recognizing this gap, adult education initiatives have incorporated modern health information into their curricula to promote evidence-based practices. The programs are delivered through workshops, community meetings, and on-site demonstrations, emphasizing practical solutions and behavioral change. This approach not only increases awareness but also encourages the adoption of consistent hygiene practices that can reduce the prevalence of diseases in the community (Oluwole, 2024). Furthermore, partnerships with local health authorities and non-governmental organizations have helped to sustain these initiatives, ensuring that the educational content remains relevant and updated in line with current health standards. As the market environment evolves with increasing commercial activities, the need for improved personal hygiene becomes even more critical. The study seeks to critically evaluate how these adult education programs have impacted personal hygiene practices among market women, considering both the successes achieved and the challenges that remain in achieving widespread behavioral change (Adebayo, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the implementation of adult education programs in Ganye Local Government Area aimed at improving personal hygiene practices among market women, several challenges continue to impede their success. A significant number of market women still struggle with maintaining proper hygiene, partly due to socio-economic constraints and the persistence of outdated cultural practices. Many participants lack access to basic hygiene facilities, and there is a notable gap between the educational content delivered and its practical application in busy market settings (Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, resource limitations and inadequate follow-up on educational interventions have resulted in inconsistent adoption of hygiene practices. The problem is also compounded by the limited involvement of local health authorities, which further restricts the sustainability of these educational programs. In addition, there is a general resistance to change due to entrenched habits and the undervaluing of formal health education among some community members. This results in a cycle where the benefits of improved hygiene practices are not fully realized, leading to persistent health issues within the market community. The study, therefore, aims to critically assess the barriers to effective implementation of adult education programs in this context and to propose evidence-based recommendations to enhance personal hygiene practices among market women (Bello, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  • To assess the impact of adult education programs on improving personal hygiene practices among market women.

  • To identify challenges that hinder the effective adoption of proper hygiene practices.

  • To propose strategies for enhancing the sustainability and reach of hygiene education programs.

Research questions

  • How effective are adult education programs in improving personal hygiene among market women?

  • What are the primary barriers to the adoption of improved hygiene practices?

  • What strategies can be implemented to overcome these challenges?

Research Hypotheses

  • Adult education programs significantly improve personal hygiene practices among market women.

  • Socio-economic constraints negatively affect the effectiveness of hygiene education.

  • Increased community engagement and local health support enhance the adoption of proper hygiene practices.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of adult education in promoting better personal hygiene practices among market women in Ganye. Its findings will inform health policy and community education strategies, thereby improving public health outcomes and reducing disease prevalence in market settings (Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to evaluating the effectiveness of adult education programs in improving personal hygiene practices among market women in Ganye Local Government Area. It is confined to existing educational initiatives and does not cover other factors affecting public health in the region.

Definitions of terms

  • Personal Hygiene: Practices related to maintaining cleanliness and health to prevent disease.

  • Adult Education: Learning programs designed for adults to enhance practical and theoretical knowledge.

  • Sanitation: The promotion of hygiene and the prevention of disease through proper maintenance of environmental conditions.
